Protests Disrupt Rally Supporting Senate Candidate in Minnesota

During a rally in Minnesota, Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed surprise when protesters unexpectedly interrupted a speech supporting Peggy Flanagan, a far-left Senate candidate.

Ellison was attempting to rally Democrats to back Flanagan when the protesters called for accountability regarding the closure of a program that investigated wrongful convictions.

This election campaign is shaping up to be a significant clash within the Democratic Party’s left wing, as Flanagan aims to defeat incumbent Representative Angie Craig in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor primary.

Clearly agitated, Ellison rushed through his comments and exited the stage. The protesters were particularly upset about Ellison’s decision to shut down the Conviction Review Unit, attributing the closure to a lack of funding from the past administration. Over five years, the unit managed to overturn three wrongful convictions.

Before being interrupted, Ellison referred to the competition between Flanagan and Craig as “a real battle of money and people.” This statement likely reflects the financial gap reported, with Flanagan having $1.56 million in cash compared to Craig’s more than $5 million as of June 30.

“We are the majority,” Ellison declared at the rally, “We will beat the money and we will beat them.”

Footage of the protests quickly gained traction on social media platforms like YouTube and X.

Notably, Craig made history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person to serve in Minnesota, and she’s also the first lesbian mother to serve in Congress.

Flanagan is receiving support from key figures within the Democratic establishment, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The upcoming primaries for both parties are scheduled for August 11.
