Video: Punk faces consequences after police find him crawling on the roof of a department store

A recent police bodycam video from Vancouver, Washington, captures a rather unfortunate moment for a suspect who tried to navigate the ceiling of a department store. As the narrator puts it, “It was at this moment he knew he screwed up.” This incident took place on September 30, when police were called to the Vancouver Mall regarding reports of a man crawling around in the ceiling, resulting in several damaged ceiling tiles.

The officers at the scene attempted to persuade the individual to come down, but he seemed determined to continue moving through the ceiling, causing further damage to lights and other fixtures. In response, they evacuated the second floor while working alongside firefighters to safely extract the man.

After over an hour of negotiations, the officers positioned a ladder in the ceiling and placed a mattress below, perhaps as a precaution. Eventually, the suspect did climb the ladder, but just when it seemed he might descend, he attempted to retreat back into the ceiling. Officers swiftly removed the ladder to prevent this, leading to his fall onto the mattress.

While the suspect did land on the mattress, he immediately attempted to evade the police. “That didn’t work out so well,” the police remarked after he quickly got up and tried to flee.

Gabriel Hideo, the suspect in question, was arrested after a bit of a struggle, where video footage showed him growling as officers tried to handcuff him. He was later charged with first-degree malicious mischief, first-degree burglary, and a felony warrant.

Interestingly, the police department’s video, which amusingly includes A-ha’s “Take On Me” as its soundtrack, attracted a flurry of lighthearted comments. Many viewers made jokes referencing 1980s culture and offered humorous observations about the bizarre circumstance of the arrest.

  • One commenter quipped, “Was his name John Bender?? Was he making a ruckus???”
  • Another joked, “Wow! They subdued Tarzan, grunts and all. And the music choice? Bonus points.”
  • One viewer exclaimed, “He sounds possessed, great job!”
  • Another noted, “Made it a ways down into the comments, and not one complaint about excessive force so far. I’m impressed!”
