Houston police say they are searching for a suspect who allegedly tried to steal a car from a townhome community complex and then abandoned it at the gate.
Surveillance footage of the incident was obtained by KHOU-TV, which also spoke with the owner of the vehicle targeted by the thieves.
Morgan Mannen said she woke up around 7:30 a.m. Monday to the sound of someone banging on her door. Her neighbor informed her that someone had tried to steal her car.
“So I ran downstairs and he said someone was trying to steal my car and it was left at the entrance,” Mannen recalled.
She spotted a Hyundai Elantra in front of the gate. The would-be robbers also damaged cars as they tried to escape from the complex.
“The whole steering column and everything,” Mannen added. “Actually, they hit the dumpster too. I just hope it doesn’t add up.”
The two robbers were captured on security video climbing over the complex’s fence before zeroing in on the Elantra. Mannen said they rushed through the complex trying to find an exit but could not find a gate to open.
“Surveillance video showed them speeding the entire time,” Mannen said. “They’re just trying to get away as quickly as possible.”
She told KHOU that 10 cars were broken into at another apartment complex shortly before the incident was caught on surveillance at her apartment complex. Mannen said he was also told by police that the thieves had abandoned another stolen car in a gated community with the same problem.
“They were driving a stolen car there and then they couldn’t get it out,” she said.
Houston police said they are working to identify and arrest the two robbery suspects.
“Vehicle break-ins are common,” Mannen concluded. “But getting your car stolen? It’s not that common.”
