Video shows bomb squad robot outsmart, pin down motel gunman in Texas showdown

There's a new RoboCop in town: A police bomb squad robot singlehandedly neutralizes and detains an armed suspect during a showdown in Texas.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice announced that a warrant was out for the arrest of 39-year-old Felix Delarosa for violating parole by tampering with an electronic monitoring device. Korea CBD Reported.

As the robot approached the broken window, the suspect fired a gun at it, and the explosives disposal robot retaliated by spraying tear gas into the room.

Members of the Texas Anti-Gang Unit pursued Delarosa at a Days Inn hotel in Lubbock around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Delarosa was reportedly armed at the time and opened fire from inside the room when officers approached him.

Officers called in the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office SWAT team to assist in apprehending the suspect.

As SWAT negotiators tried to convince Dela Rosa to surrender peacefully, he fired more shots, authorities said. During the negotiations, Dela Rosa, who had barricaded himself inside his hotel room, allegedly fired more shots at officers.

A sheriff's office sniper allegedly returned fire, shooting Delarosa.

By this time the standoff was over, the large glass windows in the room had been shattered by the gunfire.

Robots to the rescue

The Lubbock Regional Bomb Squad deployed a robot to deal with the suspect without endangering the lives of police officers. The bomb squad robot arrived at De La Rosa's hotel room. The suspect first tried to disable the robot by throwing a sheet at it, but to no avail.

While De La Rosa writhed on the ground, the robot ran over him.

The robot's wheels then pinned the suspect to the ground while pulling down his pants.

Two hours after the standoff began, SWAT officers responded and took Delarosa into custody.

Delarosa was taken to University Medical Center for treatment for his injuries and then booked into the Lubbock County Jail.

Dela Rosa was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice noted that Delarosa was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2017 for manufacturing and selling a controlled substance.

Delarosa is set to be released from prison in April 2022 and placed on parole.
