Heart-pounding footage shows the moment a brave 12-year-old boy saved the life of his mother after she plunged her car into a deep Texas pond during a medical attack.
“I’m having a seizure! I can’t move! I’m in the water, help me!” a sobbing and drenched Dwight Winbush pleaded with West Orange police, pointing to his submerged car.
Johnquetta Winbush suffered a seizure while driving through the southeastern city in late July, Deputy Police Chief Jesse Romero said Wednesday.
She lost consciousness while driving, but her foot was on the gas pedal, causing her and her two children to fall into a pond.
Dwight and his 16-year-old sister managed to escape the sinking car, but their mother was trapped inside as the vehicle sank deeper and deeper, with only the rear bumper visible above water.
Luckily, veteran Constable Charles Cobb was watching traffic nearby and the resourceful kids quickly called him for help.
“Hurry!” little Dwight yelled as Cobb helped him to the safety of the patrol car.
Body camera footage shows Cobb sprinting toward the submerged vehicle, where two good Samaritans had already begun working to free the trapped woman.
The three pulled Wimbush from the water and Cobb performed chest compressions.
“She was completely unconscious,” Romero said. “He restored a pulse while holding her to the ground and was able to resuscitate her until paramedics arrived.”
It is unclear how long Wimbush was without oxygen, but the mother of two spent three weeks in intensive care before she was able to breathe on her own again.
“She remains hospitalized but will make a full recovery,” Romero said.
Cobb and two bystanders, Corey Bull and Epifiano Munguia, were presented with lifesaving awards and certificates on Tuesday for their bravery.
