Video Shows Dramatic Rescue of Two Migrants Drowning in Texas Border River

Dramatic video released by Del Rio District Patrol Chief Robert Danley shows officers rescuing two migrants who appeared to be drowning in the Rio Grande River. They are two of the thousands of migrants rescued each year by Border Patrol agents across the country.

Chief Danley posted a video to X showing Del Rio Sector personnel riding an airboat on the Rio Grande. Video shows officers moving quickly to rescue two migrants who were at risk of drowning after getting lost during an illegal border crossing.

The video shows a large group of migrants lining a border crossing at an unknown location on the Rio Grande in the Del Rio neighborhood. Agents quickly identify migrants who appear to be in trouble deep in the river and move to pull them out of the river.

Texas National Guard boats are also operating in the area, alerting agents to the most distressed migrants.

Officials grabbed the migrants and pulled them to safety in the boat before attempting a second rescue. Agents toss rings of life as they move by the struggling migrants. After the toss removes the immigrant, they circle and throw a lifeline to the immigrant.

This tactic is successful and the migrants are quickly pulled onto the boat.

“Crossing the border illegally is dangerous,” Chief Danley posted. “stop it!”

As the number of migrants entering the country has increased significantly under the Biden administration, the number of migrant rescues has also skyrocketed. During fiscal year 2020, the last full year of President Donald Trump’s administration, agents rescued 5,071 immigrants. That number has increased every year under the Biden administration, reaching 37,323 in fiscal 2023. In the first quarter of 2024, agents rescued more than 1,600 migrants.
