Homeowner Arrested Amid Giant Rat Infestation

A large rat infestation inside a Long Island home has led to the arrest of the property owner. Video footage captured inside the house shows numerous injured rats scurrying over debris and trash as volunteers work to rescue them and provide necessary veterinary care.

Frankie Floridia, president of Strong Island Animal Rescue, described the conditions within the home as disastrous. “It’s very difficult to breathe in there. I have to wear a mask and gloves. It’s just the worst situation you can imagine,” he shared.

The house on Whitewood Drive has been condemned after reports of sanitary violations linked to the owner. Christine Stevens, a veterinary technician volunteering for the rescue, noted that many rats have significant injuries, with some showing signs of severe health issues like abscesses and possible sepsis. “I’ve seen some with their eyes bulging out—it’s really heartbreaking,” she added.

Volunteers have managed to collect approximately 150 rats, but estimates suggest there could be between 500 and 1,000 living within the walls of the house. “We suspect there are at least another couple hundred still inside,” noted Stevens.

The homeowner, who is reportedly caring for her 3-year-old grandson, faces charges related to the rat infestation. She has denied the charges, although it’s hard to ignore the conditions reported. Volunteers have discovered rat poison in the basement, suggesting more issues regarding the care environment.

Stevens expressed her distress, stating, “It’s just like what happens when you poison a rat. We’ve even seen couples with blood coming from their noses.” Furthermore, she mentioned that the team is also treating the rats for ticks, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

A neighbor living nearby commented that they hadn’t noticed any unusual smells or sights indicating such a problem existed. The volunteers are calling for donations to fund the care of the rescued rats and to find foster homes for those in need.
