South Carolina State Police truck driver attacked Hate crime charges are being considered after a mob attack outside a Circle K convenience store in Spartanburg.
According to the Spartanburg Police Department, officers were called to the store at the intersection of East Main Street and Drayton Road around 3 a.m. on Dec. 20, and when they arrived, a Circle K delivery driver had struck three people. He was told that he had been attacked.
“My understanding is that he was inside the store, then went outside and returned to the tanker truck. He worked as a delivery driver at Circle K and was dropping fuel into underground tanks.” said Maj. Art Littlejohn of the Spartanburg Police Department.
Police were able to obtain footage of the attack from a Ring doorbell camera installed at a nearby residence.
“It happened behind two tanks so you couldn’t see it clearly, but they jumped on him and ended up punching him in the face, head and shoulder several times,” Littlejohn said.
Police do not believe the victim and attacker knew each other before the incident, and the attack appears to have been unprovoked.
“Normally, the people involved in these incidents, such as assaults and assaults, know the person and are usually not strangers. But in this case, the victim did not know the suspects at all. “It doesn’t seem like it was the case,” Littlejohn added.
Police are investigating the motive for the attack, but are considering investigating it as a hate crime because the footage contained racial slurs.
“We are currently investigating it as a mob assault and battery,” Littlejohn said. The video camera contains some of the racial slurs we heard on the videotape, and that’s one of the angles investigators are looking into. ”
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects based on the vehicle’s description.
“A black SUV and a gray or silver sedan. Several men left the scene in a black SUV. A gray car with black wheels without hubcaps also left the scene,” Littlejohn said. .
