Investigation of Assault on Elderly Woman on Florida Bus

Authorities in Florida are looking into an incident where a woman was caught on video punching an elderly passenger on a bus last month.

On October 21, a 70-year-old woman was seated in the disabled section of a Broward County transit bus. Her journey took a troubling turn when she was assaulted by another passenger.

A spokesperson described the situation as “disgusting,” stating, “Such behavior should never occur in a civilized society.” They condemned the actions of the assailant as completely unacceptable.

Detectives reported that the suspect, who was standing, was jolted by the bus’s movements multiple times. Following this, the victim asked the attacker for some space, which led to a verbal disagreement.

During the altercation, the assailant aggressively pushed into the victim several times and then used a grocery bag to hit her in the face.

At one moment, a spirited elderly woman was seen on video giving her attacker an unmistakable gesture. The victim defended herself with a cane, but the suspect continued to strike her head multiple times, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fortunately, witnesses on the bus stepped in to help and separated the victim from her assailant.

The bus driver, having witnessed the incident, stopped the vehicle in the 4100 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderdale Lakes, but the attacker and her companion managed to escape.

The victim sustained a bruise on her forehead but opted not to go to the hospital. A sheriff’s spokeswoman mentioned, “Thankfully, she did not suffer serious injuries and was treated at the scene.”

Detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit have released footage of the incident, aiming to identify the woman who assaulted the elderly passenger. Anyone with information about the attacker or her companion is urged to contact BSO Violent Crimes Detective Andres Lopez.

For those who wish to remain anonymous, contacting Broward Crime Stoppers could lead to a cash reward of up to $5,000 if the tip results in an arrest.
