Vikings Address Criticism About Adding Male Cheerleaders

Vikings Maintain Stance on Male Cheerleaders Despite Backlash

The Minnesota Vikings are standing firm on their decision to include two male cheerleaders in the Minnesota Viking Cheering (MVC) team, even amidst criticism.

According to the team, while many fans might be witnessing male cheerleaders for the first time at a Vikings game, this isn’t entirely new. Male cheerleaders have been part of the previous Viking squads and have a long history in the realm of professional cheerleading at universities.

“We support all cheerleaders and are proud of the role they play as ambassadors of the organization,” the Vikings responded in a statement.

The decision sparked significant backlash, particularly after the team shared a video introducing the 2025 cheer squad, featuring male cheerleader Louie Konto. The criticism intensified when Blaize Shiek, the second male cheerleader, announced his participation through his social media channels.

The Vikings highlighted that they are not alone in this initiative; roughly a third of NFL teams incorporate male cheerleaders. Each member of the MVC team undergoes a rigorous audition process and boasts a solid dance background.

Nevertheless, the reaction from fans has been mixed, with some expressing disappointment over the inclusion of men on the team. Actor Kevin Sorbo even suggested he might need to look for a new team to support.

Other fans echoed similar sentiments, showing their displeasure through various social media platforms. Some amusing AI-generated memes also surfaced, generating a mix of laughter and scorn.

In the midst of the backlash, both male cheerleaders have reached out for support from friends and family. Louie Konto’s mother mentioned that her son is courageous, despite facing adversity. Blaize Shiek shared with his followers that he hopes to serve as a role model for young kids who haven’t considered cheerleading as an option.

“I am very grateful for this journey, the support and the opportunity to create a small piece of history along the way,” Shiek noted, expressing his desire to inspire others to embrace their identities.
