Vikings make major Daniel Jones move ahead of playoff game vs. Rams

Daniel Jones will be on the Vikings' active roster for the postseason.

The former Giants quarterback signed with 53 players on Tuesday, the team announced.

Meanwhile, the Vikings waived QB Brett Rypien to make room for Jones.

Jones had been on the Vikings' practice squad since being released by the Giants and signing with Minnesota on Nov. 29, shortly after six tumultuous seasons in the Big Apple.

In addition to keeping Jones available for the playoffs, the move also puts the Vikings in position to acquire a compensatory pick if the quarterback leaves in free agency after the season.

Jones is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The league's rules on the subject state: “Each team will be assigned a draft pick in the third through seventh rounds based on the league's formula that takes into account a player's average annual salary (APY), number of snaps, postseason awards, etc.” Compensatory draft picks will be awarded until then.” “There is an expected compensation level based on the amount a player has signed, but his playing time (or lack thereof) next season could change expectations.”

The NFL playoff bracket enters Wild Card Weekend.

ESPN's Kevin Seifert We also reported over the weekend that if the Vikings add Jones to their active roster for the playoffs, they can still make him eligible for a compensatory draft pick.

Despite this being his sixth NFL season, Jones has only appeared in two playoff games since being drafted sixth overall by the Giants in 2019.

Jones led the Giants to a playoff victory in 2022 in the wild-card round with a 301-yard passing performance, including two touchdown passes, to defeat the Vikings.

The Vikings will open the postseason against the Rams.
