Vikings to Start Rookie Quarterback Max Brosmer Against Seahawks
The Minnesota Vikings have decided to start undrafted rookie quarterback Max Brosmer in their upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday. This decision comes as second-year quarterback JJ McCarthy continues to deal with a concussion. So, the Vikings, currently sitting at 4-7 and struggling in last place within the NFC North, will be relying on Brosmer, who’s 24, to help turn their fortunes around.
Interestingly, when Brosmer steps onto the field, he’ll become the 19th backup quarterback to play this season. Initially, Brosmer was the third-string quarterback, behind McCarthy and Carson Wentz, making him the second backup to appear for the Vikings this year.
Wentz had started five games previously while McCarthy recovered from an ankle injury, but after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury, Brosmer took over the backup role. Wentz’s series of shoulder problems—including a dislocated shoulder and a torn labrum—had complicated matters for the Vikings.
With this shift in quarterback, the Vikings will become the fifth team in the NFL this season to start three different quarterbacks. They join the ranks of the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and Baltimore Ravens.
Brosmer isn’t entirely new to the scene; he spent one season starting for Minnesota and joined the Vikings after the NFL Draft. Last season, he made appearances in 13 games with the Golden Gophers, completing 66.5% of his passes for a total of 2,828 yards, along with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also managed to rush for 71 yards and five touchdowns.
The matchup against the Seattle Seahawks will be a tough one for Brosmer. The Seahawks boast the seventh-highest scoring defense in the league this season, allowing just 19.7 points per game, making this quite a challenging debut for him.
On the other side, the Seahawks will be fielding starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who has a bit of an interesting history with the Vikings, having led them to a successful 14-3 record last season before being released as a free agent.
The game is set for Sunday at 4:05 p.m., and it will be intriguing to see how Brosmer performs under the pressure.
