Vince Fong advances in special election runoff to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

California voters voted to promote Republican state Rep. Vince Fong in Tuesday’s special election to replace former U.S. Rep. Speaker Kevin McCarthy, The person who was expelled last year.

Mr. Fong is a former aide to Mr. McCarthy and is supported by both Mr. McCarthy and his former aides. president trump, He faced off against Republican Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreau as polls closed Tuesday night.

Both candidates are Republicans, so after accounting for the four open seats, Republicans would win 218 seats and Democrats would win 213. Under California’s jungle primary system, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election.

Fung, who received the most votes in the March primary, will serve out the remainder of McCarthy’s term before running against Boudreau again in the November general election.

Mr. Fung and Mr. Boudreau advanced to Tuesday’s runoff after a March special election in which they emerged as the top two candidates in California’s jungle primary system, but both fell short of the 50 votes needed to determine a winner. Trump primarily promoted CA-20 in 2020, and McCarthy represented the district from 2007 until he left office in late 2023. In February, Trump called Fong a “true Republican.”

Boudreau’s supporters include Rick Grenell, former acting director of national intelligence in the Trump administration, and Republican state Sen. Shannon Grove, from Fong’s hometown of Bakersfield.

Trump’s involvement in the campaign is a litmus test of the former president’s political relevance as he presumably prepares for a rematch with President Joe Biden in November.

“I am proud to join the California Republican Caucus in fully supporting Vince Fong,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “Vince is one of six Republicans who supported me in the State Assembly and rejected the falsehoods of a second impeachment. In Congress, Vince will work with me to grow our economy, lower taxes, cut burdensome regulations, defend American energy, and protect and defend the Second Amendment, which is under attack by the radical left.”
