Vince Fong wins California GOP House primary to fill Kevin McCarthy’s seat

California Congressman Vince Fong has won a special election to serve the unexpired term of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in the House of Representatives, according to Decision Desk Headquarters.

Fong defeated Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreau (R) in Tuesday’s election. The election was a runoff after neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March election, making them the top two candidates.

While Fung is filling the remainder of McCarthy’s term, he and Boudreau will face off again in November to finish out their terms representing California’s 20th Congressional District after both won their regularly scheduled primaries earlier this year.

McCarthy, who announced his retirement from the House after his brief tenure as the top House leader ended with his historic removal from the speakership, has endorsed Fong as his successor in the reliably red state of California, as has former President Donald Trump.
