Vindman: Trump has ‘every intention’ to undo American democracy if reelected

Retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman suggested Friday that President Trump has “every intention” of destroying American democracy if re-elected, but doubts the former president will launch a revenge campaign in his second term. Amid growing concerns about whether

“There may be only one vote left that really matters,” Vindman said. Said He said this in an interview with anchor Ali Velshi on MSNBC’s “The Last Word.” “If Trump becomes president, he has already declared his intention to be a dictator. The president and the chief executive have broad powers.”

“And while it won’t be easy to undo nearly 250 years of American democracy, much damage has been done,” he added. “And President Trump intends to do that.”

Vindman, who was a key witness in Trump’s first impeachment inquiry, suggested that Trump would try to run the White House the same way Russian President Vladimir Putin runs the Kremlin. He urged voters to make sure they cast their vote to avoid “the challenges and repression that the Russians face.”

His comments came after he criticized President Trump’s comments on NATO in the wake of the recent death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

“Donald Trump invited Vladimir Putin to attack NATO,” Vindman told MSNBC’s Michael Steele about a week ago. “I think that was probably a contributing factor to the calculations surrounding Mr. Navalny’s assassination.”

At a rally in South Carolina last month, the former president spoke about his time in office and his cooperation with NATO. Before his inauguration, he called the organization “busted,” apparently referring to the underfunding of defense funds by NATO allies.

“One of the presidents of a great power stood up and said, ‘Well, if we don’t pay and the Russians attack us, will you protect us?'” Trump said at the rally. Told. “I said, ‘I haven’t paid, I’m delinquent.’ He said, ‘Yes, let’s say that happened.’ No, I won’t protect you. ”

“In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever they want to do,” he added.

In his interview on “The Last Word,” Vindman also warned of what President Trump and the Republican Party would do in the event of an attack on NATO.

“This is not a ‘what if’ scenario, ‘What if Donald Trump were back in office in 2025?'” Vindman said. “The threat is real, because what Donald Trump has done is that he has provided a signal that not only future Trumps, but also the current Republican Party, will not show up in the event of an attack on NATO. That’s why.”
