Violence Against Christians Increases in Congo Amid Continued Islamist Militant Threats

Escalating Violence Against Christians in the DRC

Recent Islamist attacks targeting Christians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are intensifying, particularly with assaults on funerals in the eastern region that have led to numerous deaths.

Open Door, a Christian organization, reports that over 100 Christians have been killed in a series of attacks carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a militant group linked to the Islamic State, known for its brutal campaigns against civilians.

This year alone, there have been at least three major assaults where dozens of Christians lost their lives.

“We are exhausted by these killings; may God come to our rescue,” shared Pastor Parc Nzaramingi, a parish priest in Mangeldejpa, when speaking to local media.

On September 8th, in Ntoyo village, Christians were gathered for funerals when allied militants struck.

“They showed up and started killing. They calmly murdered 26 Christians at this funeral home,” recounted Pastor Mbulasamaki of Sevu Church, Mangeld Zippa. “Those who attempted to flee were shot, and others fell to machete attacks.”

The following day, violence continued with more Christians being killed throughout the area.

Reports indicate that over 70 people have been slaughtered, while homes were burned and vehicles destroyed. Additionally, militants claimed the lives of more than 30 farmers.

“In the fields, they killed Christian farmers who were camping out and anyone who returned,” Nzaramingi lamented. “It was a night filled with sorrow for Christians.”

This, unfortunately, is not the first incident of such violence this year.

In February, the ADF gathered 70 Christians in a single village, taking them to a church where they were slaughtered.

Another attack in July resulted in at least 37 deaths, primarily among the youth.

Local leaders express that Christians are weary of the ongoing violence and have called for prayers.

“Christians are bewildered; this occurred during their harvest time. It’s quite disheartening,” remarked a pastor identified only as Pastor Alili. “This violence is shaking the foundations of our faith. We ask for divine intervention,” he added.

“Let’s unite in prayer against these attacks. God tells us that if He does not protect the house, those who guard it do so in vain.”
