In a full episode of “Dateline,” Vanessa Romero suggested that doctors told Joey that his “tantrums” when he was 3 were a sign of depression. Their prescriptions: “14 different medications,” including Prozac and medications for sleep disorders, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, and anxiety.

After planting the seed, Vanessa Romero told NBC News she turned to online “support groups” to learn more about her son’s symptoms. Soon, she replaced his wardrobe entirely with girls’ clothes and encouraged him to cross-dress.
NBC News reports that after the boy started wearing girl’s clothes, his parents stopped all of the medication he was taking and concluded that cross-dressing was a treatment for his depression.
This respite from the pharmaceutical industry did not last long. As the boy began to grow toward adolescence, he began to struggle with new identity issues. As it turned out, his masculine traits were incompatible with the personality his mother espoused.
Vanessa Romero claimed that she considered having the boy’s penis amputated because he became insecure about his body. Apparently, the job was best left to a surgeon in Los Angeles who was paid to do it.
NBC News included shocking comments by Dr. Margaret Moon, chief of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, that may not have been acknowledged by the network years later.
According to the report, President Moon suggested that puberty blockers could be helpful in “extreme cases,” especially since “the changes are irreversible and include making children infertile.” He expressed concern about his age.
“When children are young, it’s harder to justify irreversible changes,” Moon said. “This could be an issue of overdiagnosis.”
