Danville City Council Member Victim of Violent Attack

On Wednesday, a Danville City Council member was seriously injured when a man attacked him with gasoline at his workplace. Lee Vogler, 39, was at the Showcase Magazine Office in Danville around 11 a.m. when the incident occurred.

Reports indicate that the assailant, identified as Hayes, poured gasoline on Vogler and attempted to flee the scene while allegedly igniting a fire in the building. Authorities have charged Hayes with attempted first-degree murder and attempted malicious injury. As of now, he is not in custody at the Danville City Jail.

During the attack, Vogler reportedly recognized Hayes and assisted police in apprehending him shortly after he fled. Officials noted that the two individuals knew each other, and the incident stemmed from personal issues unrelated to their roles in local government.

Following the incident, Vogler was airlifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment, but details about his current condition have not been disclosed. Showcase Magazine issued a statement expressing their shock and extending thoughts and prayers to Vogler and his family during this difficult time.

Vogler has been a member of the Danville City Council since May 2012, becoming the youngest council member at the age of 24. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010 and has served as the sales director for Showcase Magazine.

Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones expressed the community’s distress over the violent act, stating, “Lee is part of the city council family. Today, that family is hurt.” He thanked first responders for their swift action during the emergency.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin reached out to Vogler, sending prayers for a full recovery. Senator Tammy Murchi also weighed in, condemning the attack and expressing support for Vogler’s recovery. She highlighted Vogler’s commitment to his community and family.

As the investigation continues, local officials and community members are grappling with the implications of this violent episode, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable.
