A northern Virginia county admitted last week that about 4,000 votes were fraudulently distributed in the 2020 presidential election.
Prince William County Elections Office announced Last week, it was revealed that President Joe Biden was 1,648 votes short in the 2020 presidential election, while former President Donald Trump “accidentally gained 2,327 extra votes.”
Initial vote totals showed Biden with 142,863 votes and Trump with 81,222. However, the new revised version shows that Mr. Biden actually received 144,511 votes, while Mr. Trump only received 78,895.
In a statement, Eric Olsen, the county's election director, spoke of the “mistake” in negative terms.
“The reporting error is likely a result of the results tape not being programmed into a format compatible with the state's reporting requirements. An error appears to have occurred when attempting to correct this issue.” he stated. Said.
But Olsen said these errors “do not consistently favor any particular party or candidate and are likely due to a lack of proper planning, a difficult electoral environment, and human error.” emphasized. In fact, Biden won Virginia in 2020 by a margin of more than 450,000 votes, meaning this amendment will have no effect on the outcome of the race.
Still, Olsen did not explain what “human error” contributed to the inaccurate vote tally.
Unfortunately, it wasn't just the presidential election that was affected.
Both U.S. Senate candidates received fewer votes, including Rep. Rob Whitman (R-Va.), who fell 293 votes short. None of the mistakes affected the election results.
“The mistake is unfortunate, but it will take diligence and innovation to fix it,” Olsen said. “They do not reflect any deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity of the electoral process, and the investigation into this matter has concluded with its conclusion. This dedication continues to apply to all current and future elections. ”
The miscalculation was discovered as part of an investigation into former Prince William County Registrar Michelle White, who was indicted in 2022 on charges of corruption, false statements (all felonies) and neglect of duty. Investigators have released few details about the incident, but have alleged that White altered the election results.
Last month, prosecutors the felony charge was dropped vs. White. 3rd offense misdemeanor dropped this month. Prosecutors said the case collapsed because “some of the witnesses questioned unexpectedly changed their statements.”
