Former Virginia Lawmaker Pleads Guilty to COVID-19 Relief Fraud
A former Democratic lawmaker from Virginia, Ibraheem Samira, gained attention for disrupting President Donald Trump’s speech and has now pleaded guilty to charges related to defrauding federal coronavirus relief programs.
On October 30, a judge sentenced the 34-year-old to three years of probation after he admitted to wire fraud. He was also ordered to pay back $88,000. Samira had fraudulently secured $83,000 in Paycheck Protection Program funds in May 2020, according to reports.
Prosecutors indicated that he created fake payroll and tax documents, claiming to employ four people at his dental clinic, NOVA Healthy Smiles. These records were backdated to January 2020, and it was noted that Samira’s office didn’t even have a checking account for staff payments until days before applying for the loan.
After receiving the funds, Samira moved the money into his personal bank account via a bogus employee account. Instead of using the funds for legitimate business costs, he spent them on personal expenses and applied for loan forgiveness in August 2021.
“The defendant was stealing federal tax dollars while deciding how to spend Virginia tax dollars,” remarked federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
In an interview, Samira claimed he misunderstood the loan regulations and suggested that the responsibility for the prosecution lies with “Donald Trump’s Department of Justice.”
Initially elected to represent Virginia in a special election in 2019, Samira lost his seat in 2021. He attracted national media attention that same year when he interrupted Trump’s speech in Jamestown, holding a sign reading “Deportation Hate” and shouting, “Virginia is our home! We can’t turn you away.”
Now running a dental clinic in Stirling under a different name, Samira expressed a desire to focus on his career. However, his felony conviction prohibits him from voting or holding office.
