Representative Jennifer McClellan (D-Va.) appeared on News Nation’s “The Hill Sunday,” where she expressed concerns that the tax cuts outlined in the GOP budget proposal could negatively impact “millions of Americans” who depend on Medicaid and food assistance programs.
“This budget proposes making tax cuts permanent, which could lead to millions losing their health care and access to SNAP benefits,” McClellan told host Chris Starwald during the Sunday segment.
Republicans are collaborating to implement significant spending cuts through budget resolutions intended to advance President Trump’s agenda. This includes solidifying the tax cuts from his previous administration. Current proposals suggest establishing work requirements for “healthy” adults receiving Medicaid and for the first time, requiring states to share in the costs of food assistance programs.
While Republicans argue that imposing new work requirements for certain Medicaid recipients could save billions, McClellan raised concerns about the potential consequences. She indicated that these measures might push people out of jobs that come with medical coverage.
“In Virginia, when we expanded Medicaid, we examined work requirements and discovered that the complications often outweigh the benefits,” noted McClellan, who served as a Virginia Senator from 2017 to 2023. “The administrative costs associated with setting up and managing that system would consume much of the savings Virginia hopes to achieve.”
“States that have implemented work requirements have found that the management costs exceed the savings,” she added.
In a similar vein, some Republicans have suggested that states take on part of the funding for the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. They further propose tightening SNAP eligibility criteria and preventing any future increases in monthly benefits.
