Virginia Democratic AG candidate retains endorsements despite threatening messages

Support for Virginia AG Candidate Jay Jones Stands Despite Controversy

Top Democrats are sticking by Jay Jones, Virginia’s Attorney General candidate, even after unsettling revelations about his past messages. Recently, it came to light that Jones had expressed disturbing fantasies about violence against a Republican colleague and harm toward children.

Days after the National Review report surfaced, which brought these messages to public attention, Fox News Digital reached out to several prominent Democrats who had previously endorsed Jones to see if their support remained intact. Democratic Senator Cory Booker, who endorsed Jones in June, has not rescinded his backing, though his office did not immediately provide a comment.

Similarly, the offices of Democratic House members Eugene Vindman, Robert Scott, and Suhas Subramanyam also did not respond to inquiries about their continued support for Jones.

In a related press release, Vindman’s opponent, Tara Durant, criticized his silence on the matter, stating that Virginians deserve leaders who work to reduce political tensions instead of resorting to harsh rhetoric.

Despite the controversy, Vindman reaffirmed his support for Jones after the report. He noted this on social media, indicating that his backing was unwavering.

While Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have not officially endorsed Jones, neither has called for him to withdraw from the race. Warner referred to Jones’ texts as “disturbing” but did not elaborate. Kaine mentioned that the decision should rest with the voters, emphasizing that nothing could excuse Jones’ comments.

The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee expressed its support for Jones, urging Virginians to unite behind him. They noted that while past mistakes have come to light, Jones has taken responsibility and shown commitment to integrity.

Jones has publicly acknowledged the messages as “embarrassing and shameful,” stating that he has reached out to those affected by his comments. The controversy has sparked strong reactions among Republicans, who are now pressing for Jones to exit the race, linking the incidents to a broader dialogue about political violence.

As the campaign unfolds, it’s evident that the dynamics could shift, and it remains to be seen how both voters and political allies perceive Jones’ actions moving forward.
