Virginia Democrats hold state Senate seat in Loudon County

Virginia Democrat Kanan Srinivasan is expected to defeat Republican Twomey Harding in a special election to fill the seat representing the state's 32nd state Senate district, according to Decision Desk Headquarters. .

This victory ensured that Democrats maintained a majority in the state Senate.

This seat was previously held by Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.), who was elected in November to represent Virginia's 10th Congressional District.

Srinivasan's victory was widely expected given the district's strong blue hue, located in Loudoun County on the outskirts of Washington, D.C.

But there were some potential warning signs for Democrats from the 2024 presidential election. Vice President Harris easily won Loudoun County, but fell short of President Biden's vote margin in 2020.

In 2020, President Biden won the county by 26 points, while Harris won by 16 points. In 2021, former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (Democrat) unsuccessfully ran for governor for the second time against Gov. Glenn Youngkin (Republican), winning the county by 11 points. Voter turnout declined in years when there was no president.

Democrats said they would not take any chances in the election. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced last month that it would invest $100,000 in the Virginia House of Representatives ahead of next month's special election.
