Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor Debate Takes an Unusual Turn
In a surprising twist, the race for Virginia’s lieutenant governor saw the Republican candidates engage in a 40-minute debate on Tuesday—except, the opposing Democratic candidate was represented by an AI simulation.
John Reed, the Republican candidate, organized the event after state Senator Ghazala Hashmi dismissed multiple requests to debate. Instead of Hashmi, a robotic version was used, which responded to questions in a synthesized voice mimicking that of an actual state representative.
“It’s unfortunate that sitting state senators are either too afraid of their own track record or too calculating to confront their voters directly,” Reed stated, attempting to justify this unconventional format.
The event was labeled “The Debate That Should Have Happened,” featuring Reed on stage while a static image of Hashmi appeared on a screen during the AI’s responses.
This debate covered various topics, including the minimum wage, electric vehicles, and educational policies. Interestingly, Reed’s team didn’t let the AI generate answers autonomously; they based its responses on Hashmi’s previous public statements, as explained by Noah Jennings, Reed’s campaign manager.
Jennings mentioned, “We wanted to be as fair as possible to her and not make it seem like a comedy stunt,” clarifying that the AI only imitated Hashmi’s voice rather than answering on its own.
The concept stemmed from Hashmi declining a proposal to hold ten debates across Virginia, limiting voters’ opportunities to hear from both candidates, Jennings noted.
Hashmi’s spokesperson, Eva Pitruzzello, criticized the one-sided debate as nothing more than a desperate ploy from Reed, whose campaign has faced scrutiny due to allegations against Governor Glenn Youngkin regarding inappropriate online behavior—claims Reed has denied.
“John Reed’s failure to engage genuinely is a move straight out of Donald Trump’s playbook,” Pitruzzello remarked, recalling the former president’s use of AI-generated content on social media.
She added, “While I appreciate that AI Gazala shares the vision of a commitment to public education and reproductive rights, it’s clear that Reid is focused on tricks, not governance.”
“Maybe he should pay more attention to voters than to videos. I mean, isn’t he already in enough trouble online?” Pitruzzello concluded, hinting at the ongoing controversies surrounding Reed.
In Virginia, the role of lieutenant governor is primarily ceremonial, with the main responsibility being to break ties in the state Senate.
There have been no organized forums or discussions related to this position, which is consistent with the 2021 election cycle. Recent polling indicates a tight race, with Reed and Hashmi nearly tied; the latest Washington Post Scher School poll shows the Democrat ahead by a slender 4-point margin—well within the margin of error.
