Virginia Maloney Secures Democratic Nomination for City Council
The daughter of former New York State Senator Carolyn Maloney, Virginia Maloney, announced her victory on Tuesday after winning the Democratic nomination for the City Council seat in the Upper East Side.
At 37 years old and a Princeton graduate, Virginia triumphed in a competitive race against former teacher Vanessa Aronson and four other notable Democrats from Manhattan. Her success in the primary positions her strongly for the upcoming general election in a city that leans Democratic.
In the fifth round of New York’s ranked-choice voting, Maloney garnered 53.2% of the final votes, while Aronson received 46.8%.
“Winning this primary is a tremendous honor, and I’m excited about the chance to advocate for the community where I grew up,” Maloney remarked in a statement.
Her campaign gained notable support from a political action committee funded by Trump supporters like Bill Ackman and Durdasch.
Politics runs in the Maloney family; Carolyn Maloney, now 78, represented New York’s 12th and 14th Congressional Districts for three decades and served ten years on the City Council.
Carolyn proudly noted that Virginia would be the first child born to a sitting New York City Council member. “Now that she’s heading to the council, I know she’ll work hard and put her heart into it,” she shared with a touch of humor, adding, “She’s my councillor now!”
The family and campaign volunteers plan to celebrate Virginia’s achievement with an ice cream gathering at her mother’s apartment.
As she moves forward, Maloney will compete against Republican candidate Alina Bonsel and independent candidate Kyle Ateide in the general election this November.
