The man who dressed Spider-Man is said to have shoplifted a trading card for nearly $10,000 related to the popular anime from a shop he dined in Virginia earlier this month.
Authorities say 20-year-old Joel Brown has been accused of breaking into Gaming Giant, a family-run collectible store in Fairfax, and taking off alongside a stack of valuable cards on the night of March 14th.
Brown is said to have scouted the store in advance, the owner of the gaming giant said. FOX 5. He reportedly came in during business hours and asked about certain staged cards related to the popular anime series Dragon Ball Z, One Piece and Pokemon.
Many series of rare and desirable cards can be scored by experts.
The shopkeeper said Brown returned a few hours later on Friday night and broke into the store. According to Gaming Giant's, he made it out of “many stepped slabs and sealed Pokemon products.” Facebook.
Police received tips about the robbery and soon afterwards arrested Brown.
He was charged with robbery and released on unsecured bonds. Fairfax Police Station.
Demand for trading cards has been surged over the years as stores like Target prepare for the release of new card expansion packs this Friday.
In the past, stores have been overwhelmed by the pure mess that customers cause while trying to get their packs.
In January, a full-scale brawl exploded as customers fought each other for the pack at Costco in Los Angeles.
In 2021, Target stopped selling Pokemon and sports trading cards to curb the frequent parking battles that continue to take place with each new expansion being released.
