Manhunt in Virginia for Armed Suspect After Deputy Ambush
A widespread manhunt is occurring in Virginia for a suspect described as “armed and extremely dangerous.” This follows an ambush on two deputies who were conducting a welfare check on Friday night, resulting in the death of one officer and injuries to another.
According to Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp, Deputy Logan Att, aged 31, was killed during the incident.
The U.S. Marshals Service has placed a reward of $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of suspect Michael Puckett.
The tragic event happened just before 9:30 p.m. when the deputies went to Puckett’s residence after a family member requested the welfare check. When the deputies engaged with Puckett, he reportedly opened fire, fatally wounding Utt and injuring another deputy, who was, fortunately, saved by his bulletproof vest.
In response, the officers returned fire, but Puckett managed to escape and is still at large.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid approaching him and to contact 911 immediately if they see him.
Deputy Utt, a military veteran, had only joined the sheriff’s office this year in 2023.
“Being a sheriff’s deputy was a lifelong dream, and I worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place,” Sheriff Kemp stated on Saturday. He added that the county has lost a hero and that Utt’s family is facing an unimaginable grief.
Utt leaves a wife and children behind. The other injured deputy is reported to be in stable condition.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger is actively tracking the situation and has encouraged anyone with information about Puckett to come forward. “Congressman Logan Att’s sacrifice showcases his bravery and commitment to the community,” she noted. “Adam and I are praying for the safety of Deputy Utt’s family, the recovering officers, and all law enforcement personnel.”
The investigation is currently being led by Virginia State Police.
