Visitor dies after falling 177 feet at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon

Tragic Incident at Silver Falls State Park

A 20-year-old male hiker died on Monday in what park officials called a “horrific accident” after falling from a waterfall that drops 177 feet in Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park.

The man, who was visiting from out of state, had traveled over an hour south of Portland to explore the park. He apparently stepped off the marked path to capture a photograph and attempted to climb over a fence before crossing a stream, just above the falls.

This unfortunate event took place at an observation deck overlooking South Falls, which is the tallest waterfall within the park. It pours into a large pool below, according to information from Oregon State Police.

At around 6:30 p.m., the man fell into the pool beneath the waterfall. Bystanders witnessing the accident rushed to assist, performing CPR while emergency responders were on their way.

Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Details about his identity have not yet been made public.

“It was a pretty bad accident,” Chris Gillian, the regional manager for Silver Falls State Park, commented. “It’s a very difficult situation.” Subsequently, the Marion County Coroner released his body to the Marion County Search and Rescue team, who handled the recovery from the waterfall basin.

Silver Falls State Park is well-known for its Trail of Ten Falls, a popular route featuring ten stunning waterfalls that draw visitors from across Oregon and beyond. South Falls is particularly famous, offering a trail that allows people to walk behind the cascading water; it’s often referred to as the “crown jewel” of Oregon’s state parks.

Fox News Digital has reached out to both Oregon State Police and Silver Falls State Park to gather more information about the incident.
