A tourist from Texas, David Le, recently made headlines after winning $1 million in the Florida Lottery while visiting Cape Coral. He purchased the winning ticket at a local Walmart Supercenter, as detailed in a statement released on May 2nd.
Cape Coral, known for its extensive canal system and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, is a popular destination for vacationers seeking sun and water activities.
Le’s big win was part of the “Life Spectacular Scratch-Off” game, which boasts a total of two grand prizes of $1 million annually. The game features 234 potential $1 million prizes overall.
Interestingly, the odds of snagging a prize in this game are approximately 1 in 4.50. However, some tourists have opted for a one-time lump sum payment for their winnings, which can lead to a slight decrease in the total prize amount.
In Le’s case, he chose to accept a single payment of $640,000. The Florida Lottery noted that retailers who sell winning tickets receive a bonus; in this instance, the Walmart store received $2,000.
The Florida Lottery explains that scratch-off games are a crucial component of its offerings, accounting for about 74% of ticket sales for the ongoing fiscal year. Since their inception, these games have awarded more than $65.5 billion in prizes and contributed over $19.8 billion to the state’s Education Enhancement Trust Fund.
This win follows another significant lottery victory in California, where a homeless man recently claimed a $1 million prize from scratch tickets bought at a liquor store.
The liquor store owner expressed excitement for the winner, noting, “He’s a good guy. He deserves every penny. I was so thrilled it happened to someone who truly needed it.”
