As Los Angeles gears up for the 2028 Olympics, a report highlights potential accommodation issues, suggesting the city may struggle to house the surge of visitors hoping to see elite athletes compete.

According to Deloitte, the demand for lodging during the LA28 Games could surpass what the hotels in Los Angeles and Orange County can accommodate on the busiest days, with around 320,000 attendees potentially searching for a place to stay.

Analysis indicates that on 13 out of the 19 competition days, spectator housing might fall short. One proposed remedy is to increase short-term rental options, as Airbnb-style accommodations could help cover much of the excess demand.

The event is projected to attract a staggering 15 million people, making it one of the biggest tourist influxes Southern California has seen.

The report asserts that if short-term rental availability were to double, the area could manage an additional 282,000 tourists on peak days, addressing about 87% of the anticipated shortfall.

This increased activity is expected to generate $488 million in direct economic impact, including the creation of 5,300 jobs and $120 million in tax income, according to Deloitte.

Within just the first day of ticket registration for the LA28 Games, organizers saw over 1.5 million sign-ups. That’s pretty remarkable, especially considering it’s more than two years until the opening ceremony.

Justin Wesson, a senior public policy manager at Airbnb, mentioned, “The anticipation for the LA28 Olympics is already palpable, and now the data is clear. The need for places to stay is likely going to exceed what’s available, and tourists require more options.”

He further noted, “Short-term rentals provide a straightforward, sustainable solution, allowing more visitors to enjoy the Los Angeles area while driving significant economic benefits for the city and local communities.”

Supporters of loosening regulations on short-term rentals contend that easing restrictions, even temporarily, would help avoid overpriced accommodations during the Games. It could also encourage spending beyond the major hotel districts, benefiting nearby restaurants, shops, and small businesses.

Stuart Waldman, president of the Valley Industry and Commerce Association, stated, “LA28 is set to usher in millions of tourists, offering one of the largest opportunities for economic growth we’ve seen.”

“Practical short-term rental regulations are a sensible way to boost L.A.’s lodging capacity without requiring new construction,” he added.
