Vitalik Buterin Acknowledges Bitcoin Maximalists
Vitalik Buterin recently provided some unexpected praise to Bitcoin maximalists, which isn’t something you often see from those in the Ethereum community.
He responded to a discussion about the divide between the “open web” and the “sovereign web,” introducing a new concept he termed “corporop.” This idea encapsulates many issues plaguing the current Internet landscape.
Understanding Corpo Slop
Buterin noted that recognizing this distinction helped him articulate some thoughts he had struggled to convey previously. He believes that what many refer to as the “open web” is, in reality, shifting into something different altogether.
He defined “corpo slop” as a blend of “Corporate optimization power.” It involves sophisticated branding and initiatives that appear commendable on the surface but are fundamentally geared toward maximizing profits.
This phenomenon includes platforms that favor polarizing, attention-grabbing content, extensive data gathering, and closed ecosystems laden with hefty fees. In his view, “Homogeneity that follows trends is evil and uncool.”
Bitcoin Maximalists Were Ahead of the Game
Buterin also recognized the skepticism from Bitcoin maximalists toward ICOs, altcoins, and token speculation. Their aim has always been to keep Bitcoin independent of the so-called corporate laws.
“I have to admit that the Bitcoin maximalists were far ahead of the curve,” he remarked. “Their fear was real.”
While he disagrees with their methods—especially regarding government regulation and restrictions on Bitcoin’s technical capabilities—he acknowledged the legitimacy of their concerns.
What Sovereignty Means Today
According to Buterin, today’s understanding of sovereignty extends beyond merely controlling private keys. It now encompasses safeguarding digital privacy, minimizing corporate influence over one’s attention, and pushing back against systems that aim to exploit time, data, and money.
“Today, ‘sovereignty’ also means protecting your digital privacy through encryption and guarding your mind against corporate psychological warfare,” he stated.
His message to both creators and users was clear and direct: “Be Sovereign. Reject Corpuslaw. Believe in something.”
Implications for Cryptocurrency Users
Buterin’s framework of corpo slop offers a lens for evaluating wallets, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and protocols. The central question becomes: Does this product empower you, or does it extract power from you?
