Trump and Putin Discuss Ceasefire
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a lengthy phone conversation that lasted over two hours on Monday, where they explored the opportunity for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The discussion, which aimed to address key concerns from both sides, seemed to signal a desire for peace, albeit not immediately.
During their conversation, Trump described the talks as productive, indicating that Moscow is open to working towards ending the ongoing conflict. In his remarks, Putin echoed this sentiment. He noted that recent negotiations in Istanbul, the first direct talks between Ukraine and Russia since the beginning of the war, offered a hopeful path toward resolving issues.
Putin specifically called for a “compromise” from Ukraine’s President Zelensky, stressing that this is essential for achieving lasting peace. He expressed gratitude to Trump for supporting ongoing discussions and mentioned that they have proposed to work together on a memorandum of understanding aimed at a future peace agreement.
Moreover, Putin highlighted that a ceasefire is indeed possible, provided that an “appropriate agreement” is established. While he acknowledged that the recent dialogue gives a sense of progress, he reiterated the importance of addressing the root causes of the crisis. Essentially, he indicated that Russia holds firm on certain conditions, including the recognition of Crimea as part of Russia and control over occupied territories in Ukraine, terms that Ukraine has previously outright rejected.
The Russian president emphasized the need for both sides to pursue effective pathways toward peace while maintaining that his country’s stance is clear regarding its territorial claims. As the conversation unfolded, Putin made it clear that he was calling for some form of compromise, yet he didn’t directly name Ukraine or its leadership.
This dialogue comes on the heels of Trump’s earlier statements about the necessity of a personal meeting with Putin to find a resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It seems there’s a significant amount of contemplation about how to navigate the complex situation, with both leaders showing a mix of hope and caution.
