A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off Russia’s east coast, after which a Russian volcano erupted, according to Russian state media.
The Russian news agency TASSreported that the Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula began erupting on Saturday. CNN He noted that the volcano is about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city of 180,000 people.
Scientists told TASS that the column of ash had risen up to eight kilometers (about five miles) above sea level, and that the volcano was also spewing lava, the news agency said.
The eruption has not affected daily life for local residents, but ashfall has been reported in nearby populated areas, the TASS news agency reported.
