Zelensky Urges Tougher US Stance on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the current tone of U.S.-Russia relations as “too warm” during remarks on Saturday, pushing for Washington to impose stricter sanctions on Moscow.
Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by Vladimir Putin’s regime, Ukrainian officials are hopeful that a more aggressive stance from former President Trump might shift the dynamics.
“Let’s be clear—the current dialogue between the U.S. and Russia isn’t deterring Putin. We need a shift in this tone,” Zelensky stated.
“It’s critical that President Putin understands the U.S. is unwavering in its support for Ukraine, including through sanctions and military aid. Any suggestion to reduce assistance or treat Ukraine as comparable to Russia is profoundly unjust. Russia is the aggressor, having initiated this conflict, with no interest in peace.”
Zelensky’s comments seem to respond directly to recent statements from Trump, who has likened the situation to two children fighting, implying both sides bear responsibility for the ongoing war.
Trump remarked in February, “You’d never started it,” which seemed to embarrass Zelensky.
Since Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in 2022, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are now examining a sanctions proposal introduced by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, which aims to enhance existing measures and impose hefty tariffs on nations conducting business with Russia.
Trump has expressed mixed feelings about this sanctions proposal, concerned about its impact on negotiations with Russia while simultaneously showing frustration towards Putin.
Zelensky appears to be seeking to intensify pressure on Trump to enforce sanctions before the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, starting Sunday.
He is eager to meet Trump, as it’s the first such encounter since their last meeting at the Vatican in April.
Zelensky remarked, “Only Trump might have the influence to alter Putin’s course. The key is to impact Putin’s finances; without them, his military ambitions would be stifled.”
Ukrainian leaders have advocated for stricter measures targeting Russia’s oil revenues and banking systems, aiming to close loopholes in existing sanctions.
Additionally, Zelensky warned that “Putin has fostered a society radicalized by propaganda, filled with animosity towards NATO, the U.S., and the West.”
“Ukraine is committed to pursuing peace by any means necessary—except for surrender. But to be honest, what does a ceasefire mean?” he added.
Earlier this month, Ukraine executed a significant drone strike, destroying numerous Russian bombers within enemy territory. Following this military success, Trump publicly acknowledged the extraordinary circumstances but conceded that it did not necessarily lead to a quick resolution.
