Voter for the Hall of Fame selected Patriots owner Robert Kraft instead of Bill Belichick

Pro Football Hall of Fame Voter Explains Choice to Omit Bill Belichick

A Pro Football Hall of Fame voter has recently shared his reasoning for not including Bill Belichick on his ballot for the Class of 2026, choosing instead to support Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots.

Mike Chappell, a sports reporter with over 40 years of experience covering the Indianapolis Colts, became the second voter to publicly explain his decision in a column this week.

It seems that the choice was not straightforward. Both Chappell and Vahe Gregorian of the Kansas City Star acknowledged the challenge of selecting from a group that included Belichick, Kraft, and three senior candidates. Chappell ultimately decided on two senior candidates, feeling that it might be their last chance for induction.

Reflecting on his vote, Chappell stated, “As one of 50 people selected, I voted for Robert Kraft, the longtime and accomplished owner of the New England Patriots. I didn’t vote against Bill Belichick, who was the long-time head coach of that dynasty and has a proven track record. It’s a bit of a red flag, but I’m content with my decision.”

Chappell elaborated that he felt Kraft played a more significant role for this year’s class than Belichick. He pointed out Kraft’s contributions to establishing the Patriots’ dynasty since 1994 and highlighted his involvement in resolving labor disputes, particularly during a challenging time in 2011 when his wife was unwell.

Chappell also noted that Belichick’s association with the Spygate and Deflategate scandals may have contributed to the reluctance in voting for him. He cited the Spygate incident specifically as a factor in his decision-making.

“The stain of Spygate cannot be erased from his record,” Chappell expressed. “In 2007, the NFL fined Belichick and took away a first-round draft pick due to illegal videotaping of the Jets’ signals.” Although he believes Belichick will eventually be inducted, Chappell didn’t find this year’s choice easy.

Chappell emphasized that his vote doesn’t mean he views Belichick as unworthy of the Hall of Fame. “This year’s decisions do not suggest that Belichick doesn’t belong. He does. I believe he’ll eventually be inducted, though the timing might raise questions.” Some commentators have argued that Belichick’s impressive accolades, including six Super Bowl wins and a significant rank in coaching history, warrant immediate recognition as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky also voiced criticism over the Hall of Fame’s decision, insisting it should reassess its approach. He argued that no solid reasons against Belichick’s induction have been presented, saying, “Why can’t the Hall of Fame evaluate this? It seems like a flawed process.”

Figures like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes have shown their support for Belichick, with Kraft even referring to him as “the greatest coach of all time,” underscoring the strong feelings surrounding this debate.
