Poll Reveals Opposition to Trump’s Mineral Production Bill
A recent poll unveiled on Monday indicates that voters in key states like Georgia, Iowa, and Ohio are against a bill backed by President Trump aimed at boosting the nation’s critical mineral production.
The Coalition for the Restoration of Energy Dominance (RED) commissioned this poll to gauge the opinions of potential voters across these battleground states regarding the U.S. reliance on China for critical minerals. These minerals are essential for industries like semiconductor manufacturing and even military applications. The RED Coalition is a nonprofit group advocating for an America First energy policy championed by Trump.
In a voting memo, the RED Coalition stated:
The U.S. is facing an energy crisis, heavily reliant on foreign adversaries like China for critical minerals that are vital for our economy and national security. A survey within U.S. Senate battleground states revealed that voters in Georgia, Iowa, and Ohio largely favor increasing domestic mineral production to lessen this dependence.
The findings showed that about 75% or more of these voters feel the United States is too reliant on other nations for its energy and essential minerals.
In Ohio, 74% of likely voters support the idea of clearing land for mining critical minerals such as copper and nickel. This support is 68% in Iowa and 75% in Georgia.
Additionally, the poll highlighted that voters were in favor of HJ Res. 140, a Congressional Review Act resolution aiming to overturn a mining ban set during the Biden administration that affects some of the world’s largest copper and nickel deposits. Support for this resolution is 74% among Georgians, 69% among Iowans, and 71% among Ohioans.
Furthermore, about 60% of respondents in Ohio and Iowa indicated they would be more inclined to vote for a Republican Senate candidate who supports the bill.
The resolution has already passed the House and is now pending a Senate vote.
The RED Coalition memo noted, “Voting against this legislation that seeks to diminish U.S. reliance on China for crucial supplies poses a significant political risk in these closely contested Senate races.”
Earlier in January, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a statement in favor of the bill.
“The U.S. possesses extensive mineral resources that can generate jobs and enhance prosperity while notably decreasing our dependence on foreign nations,” the OMB statement asserted. “It’s in our national interest to unlock America’s affordable and reliable energy and resources, which will help restore prosperity to those who have been overlooked in the economy recently.”
The RED Coalition’s poll surveyed 400 likely general election voters from March 28 to March 31, with a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.
