Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz wants to pass the three central gun control measures that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been pushing for years in Washington, DC.
These restrictions – the “assault weapons” ban, universal background checks, red flag laws – have been repeatedly pushed by Biden and/or Harris at every opportunity, including ones that have absolutely no connection to the events that led to their mention in gun legislation.
for example, Detroit Free Press I got it. Biden has pushed for restrictions such as an “assault weapons” ban and universal background checks in response to the Michigan State University shooting on February 13, 2023. However, because the Michigan State University shooter used a handgun, not an “assault weapon,” and obtained his handgun “legally,” adding point-of-sale background checks would not have been an impediment.
More recently, at her first campaign rally after Biden announced he would not seek reelection, Harris told a Milwaukee audience, “We will finally pass red flag laws, universal background checks and an ‘assault weapons’ ban.”
Walz is aligned with Biden and Harris on these three regulations.
February 21, 2018 Star Tribune report At the time, Walz, a U.S. representative and leading Democratic gubernatorial candidate, was pushing for a ban on “assault weapons.”
And in his second term as Governor of Minnesota, KARE11 I got it. As part of his 2023 State of the State message, Gov. Walz criticized firearms, which he called “weapons of war,” saying, “I’m not just a veteran, a hunter or a gun owner. I’m also a father and a long-time teacher. I know that weapons of war have no place in schools, churches, banks or any place where people are just trying to live without fear.”
Walz has also signed gun control legislation as governor, something both Biden and Harris have sought to ensure at the federal level.
May 19, 2023, Waltz’s office put out A press release noting that he signed the Universal Background Checks and Red Flag legislation into law.
Universal background check laws, by their very nature, prohibit the private sale of guns, and in California, universal background checks were ultimately tied to state-level gun registration requirements because, to be effective, such checks need to be tied to a firearms registry.
Red flag laws allow for the confiscation of citizens’ guns for a period of time, raising due process concerns.
