Vance Criticizes California Leaders Over Law Enforcement Risks
During a speech in Los Angeles on Friday, Vice President JD Vance expressed dismay at the actions of California’s leadership, particularly targeting Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass. He accused them of creating an environment that effectively puts federal law enforcement at risk.
Vance was notably shocked to learn that the names and addresses of federal law enforcement personnel—and even their family members—were being publicly shared in Los Angeles. “This needs to end,” he asserted. “Law enforcement officers I’ve talked with feel that local leaders are supporting outside agitators. It’s concerning, to say the least.”
He revealed that a local law enforcement official informed him about Border Patrol agents facing potential threats while trying to make arrests, largely because local leaders treat the city like a sanctuary, which endangers the lives of law enforcement officers.
“It’s baffling,” he remarked. “These individuals have, in a sense, been attacked by local officials. Newsom and Bass are essentially making it open season on federal law enforcement.” He criticized them for undermining the authority of Border Patrol, emphasizing that these agents are crucial for enforcing national laws.
In the context of ongoing anti-ice protests, Vance pointed out that Newsom has been a critic of the Trump administration’s deployment of military personnel during such events, claiming it was illegal and immoral. Moreover, Newsom has initiated a lawsuit against the federal government to halt military involvement during riots, though a recent ruling allowed for military support in emergencies.
“When someone encourages riots, they are putting federal officers in peril,” Vance stated. He expressed frustration with the Ninth Circuit’s recent ruling, describing efforts to secure cities as illegitimate when federal resources are deemed unnecessary.
Vance concluded by emphasizing that the President’s message is straightforward: communities should enforce their own laws and protect federal agents. When chaos ensues, federal law enforcement will be deployed to safeguard communities. He lamented the current state of affairs, calling it a tragedy where local leadership encourages actions that jeopardize public safety.
