Walmart Can Encourage Suppliers to Absorb Tariffs Gradually, Anticipate Some Short-Term Fluctuations

Walmart and Tariffs: Insights from White House Economic Advisors

During a segment on Newsmax TV’s “The Record” on Monday, Stephen Miran, who chairs the White House Economic Advisors Council, stated that “over time, Walmart can absorb tariffs imposed on Chinese suppliers and others.” He added that this phenomenon happens gradually, similar to past experiences where China absorbed tariff costs.

Host Greta Van Susterlen raised a point, asking how to reconcile the Walmart CEO’s comments about struggling with rising expenses while starting new manufacturing, particularly since this impacts everyday shoppers at large retailers like Walmart.

Miran responded by asserting that there is no significant evidence of macroeconomic inflation stemming from the president’s policies. He indicated that China had borne the cost of tariffs during the previous term. Notably, last month saw the lowest core inflation level since March 2021, allowing importers to shift costs to others.
