Initially, it was just spray paint, then eye drops, and now, it seems even ground beef is under tight security.
A Walmart in San Jose has taken theft prevention a step further by placing high-quality cuts of beef and packages of ground meat in metal cages to deter shoplifting.
Influencer Tony Bartleson, who goes by “Meat Dad,” shared a video showcasing ribeye steaks and ground beef secured with wire devices in a California store.
Bartleson playfully remarked, “Welcome to California,” while displaying a cowboy ribeye priced close to $16 a pound.
The video also captured a three-pound package of ground beef locked inside one of those metal cages, attracting over 3.8 million views.
He expressed surprise at the overwhelming public reaction.
“It’s disheartening to see basic food items secured like this,” Bartleson noted. “I really hope for a day when these kinds of measures won’t be necessary anymore. It would be great if we could ensure everyone has access to essentials without such extreme precautions.”
He continued, “Most people likely prefer a world where everyone can put food on the table with dignity, and I really hope we can keep moving in that direction.”
This unusual safety measure has sparked a lively discussion online, with many shoppers expressing understanding for Walmart’s decision to take such actions.
“I don’t blame Walmart. When some people steal, it makes this necessary. If you plan to pay, what’s the issue?” one commenter said.
Another added, “Companies should protect their goods from theft. When items are stolen frequently, it drives prices up.” Yet another voice raised concerns about the situation, saying, “Locked meat? For what? Theft? No!”
This scenario echoes a viral clip from last year, where a shopper was seen with meat in a cage within the butcher section of Walmart.
It’s not clear from the video which specific store in California Bartleson visited or whether this security measure is isolated or more widespread. Walmart has been contacted for additional details.
