Walz Administration Claims to Have Improved Oversight Following Viral Documentary on Fraud Allegations

New Investigation Launched in Minnesota Amid Fraud Allegations

On Sunday, the office of Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz announced the initiation of a new investigation following a viral video that highlighted potential wrongdoings within the state. This video, created by independent journalist Nick Shirley, sheds light on issues faced at over 20 licensed childcare centers and health care providers that are part of state-funded programs.

In a statement, Walz’s office claimed that the administration has ramped up oversight in response to the documented fraud scheme. “The Governor has been working for years to address fraud and has requested the Legislature for additional authority to take stronger measures,” the statement elaborated. They also noted increased surveillance, including investigations into specific facilities, one of which has already been shut down.

Furthermore, Walz’s office revealed that they have engaged an external firm to audit payments to high-risk programs, permanently suspended the Housing Stability Services program, named a new statewide program integrity officer, and supported criminal prosecutions.

In Shirley’s documentary, he reported on one facility, “Quality Learning Center,” which oddly had a misspelled sign. Remarkably, this daycare center has received $1.9 million from the government over the last few years, yet, according to Shirley, the center was empty during a weekday midday visit. “There were no children here, just a couple of guys smoking outside,” remarked one of his collaborators, highlighting the absence of kids despite the facility being licensed for 99 children.

The state administration has been under scrutiny for fraud related to a significant number of Somali community members in the Minneapolis-St. Louis area. Notably, it has been reported that scammers might have misappropriated around $9 billion in federal funding for state programs over the past seven years, raising alarm among federal prosecutors.

FBI Director Kash Patel remarked that the agency is aware of ongoing social media reports regarding misconduct in Minnesota and has increased personnel and resources for investigation. He shared that the FBI has already dismantled a $250 million fraud operation that misused federal food aid intended for children during the pandemic. Patel emphasized that this operation is likely just “the tip of a very large iceberg,” vowing that the investigation will continue as they track the funds and work to protect vulnerable children.
