Conflict Over Investigation in Minneapolis

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for their roles in escalating tensions linked to the Trump administration’s deportation policies.

Host Jake Tapper raised the issue of collaboration, noting that local authorities in Minnesota sought permission to team up with the FBI for the investigation into a shooting. However, he stated that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Enforcement revealed they were denied access to evidence. The governor and mayor pointed out that in similar investigations, there is usually cooperation between federal, state, and local authorities. Tapper questioned why that wasn’t happening in this case.

Noem responded by asserting, “We’re following the same established procedures in these situations. There has been no change. The investigation is ongoing, and the federal government is collaborating with the Department of Justice.”

Tapper pressed further, asking, “Why not coordinate with local officials?”

Noem replied, “When local authorities work with us, we definitely work with them. However, our investigation processes within ICE and the Department of Homeland Security are consistent and remain unchanged in this instance.”

Tapper continued to probe, asking for clarification on their working relationship.

Noem emphasized, “We aim for collaboration, as well as active operations. Sanctuary cities like Minneapolis pose significant risks to public safety. We’ve apprehended numerous serious criminals since our involvement.”

Tapper then pointed out that while officials claim the Justice Department isn’t cooperating, he questioned whether they should be more engaged with local residents.

Noem responded by suggesting that both the governor and mayor were politicizing the matter and misrepresenting the situation. She advocated for them to act more responsibly and not undermine trust in law enforcement by using politically charged language.
