Federal Raids on Minnesota Daycares Amid Fraud Allegations

Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, a Democrat, faced criticism recently as he attempted to take credit for federal raids targeting daycares and autism centers in the state. These actions came amidst claims that he had obstructed investigations into fraudulent activities.

The Department of Justice revealed on Tuesday that it was investigating approximately 20 locations in connection with a significant fraud operation allegedly linked to the Somali community in Minnesota.

In a rather curious move, Walz announced a pause in his re-election campaign due to the obstruction allegations. Yet, he later posted on social media, asserting his role in the federal raid. He stated, “If you commit fraud in Minnesota, you will get caught. And that’s exactly what we saw today. When state and federal agencies share information, they catch criminals. Joint investigations work, and ensuring justice depends on it.”

He further claimed that the raids resulted from state agencies identifying and reporting what he referred to as “irregular activities.” In a somewhat tangential comment, Walz said, “Let’s now work on the joint investigation into the murders of Alex Preti and Renee Good, instead of cherry-picking when it comes to seeking justice and when we look the other way.” Preti and Good had died while intervening with federal immigration officials in the state.

FBI Director Kash Patel quickly rejected Walz’s assertions, countering, “Here we go again? This FBI and Department of Justice, working with our DHS partners, drafted and executed all search warrants today. But please, please applaud our work as we root out the fraud plaguing Minnesota under your governor.”

In a response that perhaps stirred the pot further, Florida Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna remarked, “I’m glad Tim Walz is finally willing to hold these fraudsters accountable, but unfortunately it’s too late as I’ve already asked the Department of Justice to refer him and the other bad actors for their part in this horrific Minnesota fraud scheme.”

The FBI’s operations on Tuesday included multiple daycares and autism treatment centers, notably the Quality Learning Center on Nicollet Avenue.

Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized the importance of the task force’s mission, stating, “The task force and the Department of Justice will relentlessly expose these fraudsters wherever they may be hiding.”

Since 2021, nearly 100 individuals have faced fraud charges in Minnesota, with 67 convictions. A significant element of this fraud is linked to Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit implicated in misappropriating hundreds of millions of dollars from federal nutrition programs.
