Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, spoke at a rally in Omaha Saturday, appealing to Nebraska Republican and Libertarian Party voters.
Walz, who grew up in the Cornhusker State, told the crowd, “We have a slogan in Nebraska that says, ‘Nebraska isn’t a place for everybody.’ It’s certainly not a place for Donald Trump. This man is the antithesis of everything we have here.”
“I know where I am and I know my family. You remember when Republicans talked about freedom, and they meant it. They would never turn their backs on their allies. The traditional Republican Party before Donald Trump did so much for this state and this great country, and he is not that.”
“When we talk about freedom today, we’re saying that the government should have the freedom to invade our doctors’ offices,” Walz added, referring to abortion, “or that corporations should have the freedom to pollute our air and water, or that banks should have the freedom to exploit the least fortunate.”

Repeating his favorite “mind your own business” line, Governor Walz said he is aware the state has “libertarian leanings.”

“No need. [the] “We don’t need the government to tell us about health care,” he told the audience. [the] Let the government pick the books for you to read. This is truly a personal matter, folks.
“And to me, this idea of the health care decisions that we make and the choices that we make about our families, this is your family. You don’t need me. You don’t need Donald Trump. [the] There’s no way the government is going to tell you about your family. But that’s exactly what they’re doing. … If you’re an old-school libertarian, a Republican, a Nebraskan, this is for you. This is for you.”

The governor visited Omaha on Saturday because Nebraska is one of only two states in the country that allocates a portion of its electoral votes to districts, and while most of Nebraska is solidly red, the 2nd District has been won by Democrats in recent years.

Former President Barack Obama won the 2nd Congressional District in 2008, strategically targeting it to split the state’s vote for the first time since 1964, and President Biden won the state’s sole electoral vote in 2020.
That’s something both Harris and Trump are gunning for this year as the election is expected to be close.
