It was quite a moment during Thursday’s training camp when two best friends and teammates, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and cornerback Andru Phillips, showcased their skills against each other.
Robinson, who stands at just 5’8″, was targeted by Russell Wilson with a high throw into the end zone. Phillips was in coverage, and it initially looked like the pass might be incomplete as both players fell to the ground. But somehow, Robinson managed to secure the ball while sliding.
He leaped up, clearly thrilled, celebrating with his teammates. “I love competing with him,” Phillips reflected afterwards, admitting he thought the pass was going to be a miss. It must have been a cool moment for him, too, as he intercepted a pass on a short route against Robinson.
Robinson, surprised, called out to an official, asking how Phillips had managed to make the play. “I just undercut him and saw the ball,” Phillips explained confidently.
The two have a strong connection from their college days in Kentucky, which adds an interesting layer to their competition. “We were just joking about it afterwards,” Phillips shared, highlighting their long-standing friendship.
Meanwhile, rookie Jackson Dart experienced a little hiccup during practice, throwing an interception on his very first pass. Coach Brian Daboll pointed out that these sorts of experiences are valuable for growth, emphasizing the need to learn from mistakes.
As for wide receiver Malik Nabers, he has been performing well, although he’s dealing with some toe issues. There was mention of possible surgery, but for now, they’re opting to manage his condition closely.
“We’re monitoring it,” Daboll said, noting that they’ll adjust their approach depending on how Nabers feels. “You look at him, and he seems to be doing alright.”
