WaPo editorial board pens hypothetical July 4th Biden withdrawal speech

of The Washington Post Editorial Board I wrote a hypothetical withdrawal speech that President Biden would deliver on the Fourth of July.

The speech argues that the Founding Fathers knew that “there are seasons of life” and “seasons of service,” and the hypothetical Biden applies that to his own life and term as president.

“They also knew that reliance on one man – a king – may create the illusion of strength but at its core is fragile,” the speech read. “I have been thinking about this for the past few days. My season of service is drawing to an end. This is a difficult truth to accept. But this is the natural course of things, as obvious as the passage of spring from summer or autumn from winter. This is why I have decided to withdraw from the race for President of the United States.”

As a next step, the Washington Post editorial board has suggested holding an open Democratic convention, including debates, before the August convention, which would feature Vice President Kamala Harris.

Biden responds to criticism of debate performance: ‘I messed up’

“The Democratic National Committee, the Democratic leadership and I have agreed to an orderly process for selecting our next nominee, which will include debates between now and our convention in August,” the speech read. “My Vice President, Kamala Harris, has graciously and bravely agreed to participate. While Democratic primary voters will not be able to participate at this late date, their delegates will make the final choice.”

In his speech, he condemned the “unique danger” of former President Donald Trump insisting that he was the only one who could lead the country, but said that if Biden became president, he “won’t make the same mistake” even if most people “want to stay in the fight.”

“But I need something this country cannot offer me at this time – a leader with the energy to run a vigorous campaign and then work hard for America for the next four years,” the speech read.

A hypothetical President Biden would pledge to support the next Democratic candidate between now and the election and tout the accomplishments of his presidency in contrast to Trump’s term four years ago.

“I ask you, Americans, to do as I do and examine your souls,” he wrote in a speech to the Washington Post editorial board. “Are we so insecure that we would empower a would-be king with sweeping powers from an active Supreme Court?”

Race crisis: Democrats call for Biden to step down, worry about his health

“Or, in this springtime of American life, will we look back to Washington’s example and recognize that our independence was founded on service, sacrifice, a willingness to bring out the best in one another, and a faith that better seasons were to come?” the speech concludes.
