Warner Bros. Discovery Teams Up with Disney and Universal to Sue AI Company Midjourney, Claiming Significant Copyright Infringement

Warner Bros Discovery Files Lawsuit Against AI Startup Midi Joanie

Warner Bros Discovery has initiated legal action against the AI startup Midi Joanie, claiming the company has produced numerous copies of its characters without permission.

The conglomerate alleges that Midi Joanie has engaged in what it describes as brazen distribution of Warner Bros’ intellectual property as if it were its own. A report from a notable outlet highlighted these accusations.

In the lawsuit, Warner Bros Discovery asserts that Midi Joanie has generated countless images and videos featuring its copyrighted characters, including popular figures like Superman, Bugs Bunny, and Scooby-Doo.

The company contends that the AI software has reproduced and shared unauthorized derivatives of its intellectual property through its image- and video-generating tools.

The complaint cites several instances where Midi Joanie’s AI purportedly created images of characters like Wonder Woman and Tweety Bird, often in various scenarios requested by users.

Additionally, Warner Bros Discovery claims that Midi Joanie’s system can generate images that infringe on copyrights, even if the prompts given by users don’t explicitly mention any characters.

One example cited in the lawsuit involved the AI creating images of Superman, Batman, and the Flash when prompted with “Classic Comic Book Superhero Battle,” which users could then download.

Earlier, in June, Disney and Universal also filed a joint lawsuit against Midi Joanie for similar concerns.

Warner Bros Discovery criticized Midi Joanie for recognizing the extensive nature of copyright and piracy issues yet ostensibly failing to safeguard the rights of copyright holders.

According to the conglomerate’s lawsuit, “It’s hard to imagine more intentional copyright infringement than what Midjourney is doing here.” They further assert that Midi Joanie is exploiting Warner Bros’ valuable intellectual property to draw in subscribers.

Warner Bros Discovery is seeking a court order to prevent Midi Joanie from continuing to copy, display, and distribute its intellectual property. They hope to have AI programs prevent the distribution of tools lacking appropriate copyright protections.
