Warning sign: Former speaker alerts to the increasing danger of GOP House resignations

Political Divisions Within the GOP May Increase, McCarthy Warns

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has expressed concerns that divisions within the Republican Party might become more frequent. This warning follows the announcement by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene that she would be stepping down from her position in January, before her term concludes. Her decision came after a public dispute with President Donald Trump, who has been a close ally.

“I thought Marjorie was very effective,” McCarthy noted. Despite Greene’s strong support for Trump, she indicated that her disagreement with the former president stemmed from her commitment to unveil the Epstein files, which the White House later backed. Other sources suggest that the situation escalated after the White House hindered Greene’s political ambitions beyond her current role.

McCarthy reflected on Greene’s departure, stating, “She’s leaving Congress, but I don’t think that’s the end for her.” He has a point—her resignation could signal larger changes ahead unless there’s a shift in Congress.

Calling her situation a “canary in the coal mine,” he emphasized that the internal discord needs to be addressed urgently. “Many people are going to retire, and they need to focus,” he said.

Moreover, McCarthy pointed out that ongoing infighting risks undermining the Republicans’ opportunity to capitalize on their control of Congress. “I think if you keep members out of Congress, you only have two years to get a majority,” he cautioned. “If Democrats hold us back from working every day for two months, we lose two months of our majority.”
