Warriors approach final roster choice while pursuing LeBron James

LeBron James and the Warriors: What’s Next?

Mike Dunleavy Jr. might have just added a new twist to the ongoing speculation about LeBron James’ free agency. Or, he may simply have hinted that the Warriors are ready to move ahead without him.

During a recent Golden State summer league game, the Warriors’ general manager indicated that the team is close to wrapping up its offseason plans.

“I think we’re getting closer to finalizing the roster here,” Dunleavy mentioned. “So we’re looking forward to that finish line.”

Predictably, this standard front office update quickly led to renewed discussions about LeBron.

The Warriors seem to be interested in James after his recent announcement about leaving the Lakers. Notably, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have been unusually proactive in this pursuit. Curry has reached out to James, while Green has had discussions with him during the offseason.

So, Dunleavy’s choice of words is tough to overlook. If the Warriors are indeed counting on James as their final piece, the phrase “coming close” may imply that they think his decision is just around the corner. It could suggest that Golden State is still very much in the running.

Then again, it could mean something entirely different.

According to a recent report, James’ focus has shifted toward the Cavaliers, Heat, and 76ers. Perhaps Dunleavy is simply aware that Golden State can’t afford to wait on him any longer this offseason.

If James decides to sign with another team, the Warriors might look for a veteran replacement or enter the season mostly with their existing talent.

There are noticeable gaps remaining for a team that seems to be nearing a big decision.

With Curry’s championship window dwindling, a partnership between him and James could arguably be one of the most intriguing late-career combinations in NBA history.

However, Dunleavy’s remarks don’t clarify whether the Warriors are preparing to bring James on board or if they are closing that door entirely.

One thing is clear: the anticipated game of speculation is nearly at its end, whether it ends with a signing or not.
