Warriors considering DeMar DeRozan as they await LeBron James

Warriors Eye DeMar DeRozan as Backup Plan

The Golden State Warriors seem to have a potential backup plan in place.

DeMar DeRozan has gained traction as a noteworthy veteran option while teams evaluate LeBron James’s availability. Following his release from the Sacramento Kings, Golden State is reportedly considering pursuing DeRozan, as noted by NBA insider Brett Siegel.

“DeRozan now serves as a sort of plan B for teams interested in LeBron James,” Siegel mentioned regarding the situation. “The Warriors are expected to have internal discussions about acquiring DeMar DeRozan.”

This consideration is critical, especially since the Warriors want to maximize the final stages of Stephen Curry’s career. The idea of pairing Curry with LeBron is appealing, presenting a chance to unite two legendary players who have faced off in NBA Finals.

However, if that pursuit doesn’t pan out, Golden State can’t leave Curry without additional support.

While DeRozan may not possess the same star power or playmaking prowess as James, he’s not without merit. He offers the Warriors a reliable option for scoring in half-court situations.

At 36, DeRozan has remained a consistent scorer, averaging 18.4 points last season with Sacramento, and he’s recognized for being one of the league’s top mid-range shooters.

For the Warriors, who often depend on Curry to initiate their offense, adding DeRozan could provide an experienced player who can stabilise the game when things slow down.

Moreover, his potential market value makes him a compelling choice. DeRozan is not anticipated to command a massive contract, possibly making him an appealing veteran addition for teams looking for budget-friendly options.

This financial aspect might be significant for the Warriors as they seek to retain some flexibility while waiting on James’s decision.

Siegel also pointed out that Miami and Cleveland could be potential destinations for DeRozan. Miami’s interest has been ongoing, and the Cavaliers might consider him if they fall short in their pursuit of James.

There’s a broader trend of teams linking DeRozan’s future to LeBron’s choice, as many are keen to see where the star free agent lands before finalizing their plans.

For Golden State, the reasoning is straightforward. If LeBron opts to move, DeRozan might just be the key piece the Warriors need.

And with Curry now being 38, it’s clear that Golden State must look beyond simply waiting around.
